Eurorack CV module for NuEVI and NuRAD

  • Make sure NuEVI or NuRAD is updated to firmware version 1.5b7 or later.
  • Install module in Eurorack case (already pre-installed on Gray Mini). Mind orientation of power connector (red stripe is -12V in Eurorack standard).
  • Use a fully wired MIDI cable from NuEVI/NuRAD. The CV signal is carried on the two unused wires in the MIDI cable.
  • Patch NOTE CV to 1V/oct input on VCO (Mod/CV/Lin.FM).
  • Patch BRTH CV to cutoff frequency modulation input of VCF.
  • If a VCA is used, open it by turning up VCA Bias/Offset/Initial Gain, or patch the breath CV to VCA.
  • Tune NuEVI/NuRAD CV against VCO using the settings CV SCALE and CV TUNE in EXTRAS menu.

When testing your module, these settings were in tune for the reference system:

CV TUNE

CV SCALE

Depending on MIDI cable resistance, VCO tuning or other environmental factors, these may not be the accurate settings in your system, but it should be in the ballpark.

Full tuning procedure – NuEVI/NuRAD CV to Eurorack VCO

Prerequisites/required:

  • Tuner
  • Eurorack module(s) in standard setup
    • VCO
    • VCF
    • VCA
  • Patch cables connected
    • Note CV to 1V/oct input on VCO (Mod/CV/Lin.FM).
    • Breath CV to cutoff frequency modulation input of VCF and to VCA mod input.
  • Audio output from Eurorack (mixer/amp/speaker/headphones)

Procedure:

1. Power up Eurorack (Gray Mini) and let warm up for half an hour, or at least 15 minutes.

2. With NOTE CV cable from controller disconnected turn up VCA level/initial gain and filter cutoff to hear output from VCO.

3. Select a middle octave position and tune the VCO to C using the tuner. Selecting octaves up and down on the VCO should be pretty much in tune also, but should it be slightly sharp or flat at the ends this will be compensated for when tuning the controller output.

4. Connect the Note CV from controller (powered on) back into the modulation input of the VCO. Output from VCO will change.

5. Select an octave or two down from middle octave on the VCO to get into the right range for the controller.

6. Flick through the octaves using the NuEVI/NuRAD octave rollers. Do not look at the tuner now, just go by ear.

7. Navigate to the NuEVI/NuRAD CV SCALE tuning in EXTRAS menu.

8. If the range is compressed (sharp on lower octaves, flat on higher octaves), increase the CV SCALE setting value. If the range is too wide (flat on lower octaves, sharp on on higher octaves), decrease the CV SCALE value. Change the value while flicking through the octaves. The mean note will change while doing this, so keep flicking and listen to the octave intervals, not the individual notes.

9. When the scaling is in tune over the octaves to your ear, move to CV TUNE setting in the menu and set the value so a middle C played on the controller is middle C on the tuner.

10. Go back to CV SCALE and fine tune the scaling using the tuner, playing the C in all octaves. If needed, go back and forth to CV TUNE to keep the middle C on target.

11. When the C is as close as possible to target in all octaves the tuning procedure is complete. (If you have a super accurate pro tuner you still see some minor inconsistency over the entire range, and this is normal.)

12. Turn down VCA gain and VCF cutoff to normal values for your wind controller playing and play!
